The Joint Commission National Quality Approval

Patients who come to HRMC’s Total Joint Replacement Program are surrounded by an atmosphere of caring, comfort, and complete understanding. The Total Joint Program provides comprehensive preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation services for patients undergoing Hip, Knee, or Shoulder replacement surgeries. The unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team working together to provide encouragement and support.

The Total Joint Replacement Program Services include:

  • Preoperative Education Class for the patient and their Coaches/Family Members
  • Special instruction for Coaches/Family members
  • Planning for Hospital Stay and Post-Hospital care
  • Dedicated Orthopedic Unit
  • Individual Physical Therapy sessions twice daily

Replacement Surgeries: What to Expect

Total Hip, Shoulder and Knee replacement surgeries generally take from two to three hours and involve affixing an artificial joint made of metal and plastic to the bone. After surgery, patients stay on the dedicated Orthopedic Unit, where recovery and rehabilitation begins.

Preoperative Education Services

HRMC’s staff, along with your Orthopedic surgeon’s office, begin working with patients before their scheduled surgery. Patients are given an education book to take home from the office to help prepare them for surgery.

Preoperative Class

The Total Joint Coordinator provides a special preoperative class for patients, their coach and/or family. That way, everyone knows what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Preoperative class topics include:

  • Safety Precautions
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clot) prophylaxis
  • Exercise
  • Ensuring a safe home environment
  • Potential postoperative complications
  • Pain Management
  • Tour of the Orthopedic Unit

Postoperative Rehabilitation

Patients will receive morning and afternoon physical therapy daily. The first day of surgery, patients will be evaluated and participate in an individual session. From that point forward, sessions are conducted twice daily where patients perform different exercises, practice correct transfer techniques, and learn to walk or move about with assistive devices.

Surgeons recommend that patients continue physical therapy once they go home. For those who require further assistance, arrangements can be made for Home Health Care or a transition to a Skilled Nursing Facility for a short stay.

Most patients are discharged one to four days following surgery. However, patients may stay longer if there is a medical need to do so.

Family and Coach Involvement

We realize that family members and coaches play a crucial role in the recovery process. Family members and coaches are encouraged to participate in our preoperative education class as well as in physical therapy sessions. These provide important instruction on how to help care for patients recovering from Total Hip, Knee or Shoulder surgery.
